Dunollie Museum, Castle and Grounds are excited to announce plans for an upcoming event on Scottish Women Collectors, which will be delivered as part of ‘Sophy and White: The Dunollie Collections Unboxed’. The project is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Oban Common Good Fund.
The Sophy & White Project aims to uncover the collections at Dunollie. This event will focus on Hope MacDougall and her social history collection, much of which has been in storage for a number of years but has been identified as a highly important research collection.
Hope MacDougall was recognized as part of a notable group of 20th century women collectors. This project will carry out an in-depth study to help us properly understand these women, their collections, and the links between them, highlighting the sidelining of women at that time. The output will be this sharing stories event, bringing the local community together.
We invite papers on any aspect of the history of Scottish women collectors. Topics could include, but are not limited to:
• Issues around 20th century women being marginalized and dismissed academically because of their gender.
• Hope MacDougall and other curators of Women's Collections (possibly including I.F. Grant, Frances Tolmie, Barbara Fairweather, Marion Campbell, and others).
• Women’s contributions to recordings of social history of Scotland, in particular the western Highlands and Islands.
• Traditional crafts, skills and professions including agricultural practices, early distilling, bee keeping, dairying, shoe making, travellers camp, laundry, knitting and weaving.
• Ordinary working and domestic lives of people in Scotland, in particular working women in rural communities.
