At our next meeting on 11 January, David Devereux will be speaking on the subject ‘Tongland Abbey and Tongland Fish House – A Tale of two Ruins’.

Up until the 1930s, the Fish House was the centre of the economically important Tongland salmon fishery, documented as far back as the mid 17th century but possibly in operation long before this.

Tongland Abbey was founded by Alan, Lord of Galloway, in 1218 for the Premonstratensian order.
The physical evidence of this once extensive abbey is limited to part of a wall and a rebuilt doorway in the ruined 1633 parish church.
Trial archaeological survey and excavation in the last two years has attempted to find more evidence of this important medieval site.
