Morningside Heritage Association
About
Based in Morningside, in south Edinburgh, Morningside Heritage Association was established in 1982 by the local author Charles Smith. Our aims are :
a) to promote a historical, educational and cultural interest in the area.
b) To collect and preserve any material relevant to the area.
c) To assist in the protection of the heritage of Morningside and Lothian.
d) To make available to the public such material as may be appropriate.
We run a programme of monthly talks between October and April, meeting on the first Tuesday of those months in the Braid Hall, Morningside Parish Church, between 6.45 and 8.30 p.m.. We also organise up to five visits over the summer months.
We have published three volumes of 'Morningside Memories', covering respectively the periods from 1900 to the early 1940s (Volume One), from the late 1940s to the end of the 20th Century (Volume Two), and Life in Morningside in the First and Second World Wars (Volume Three) - this latter was published on 11 November 2018, the centenary of the end of World War I.
We have also published a Heritage Trail of Morningside, which includes a trail for children.
We have an extensive archive of slides, photographs, pamphlets and documents gifted to us by the family of Bill Smith, Charles' brother, who undertook much of the photography for Charles' books. The slides have been catalogued and digitised, and we are in process of uploading them the Scottish Central Research Access Network (SCRAN) for public display.
